Biography
Pelagia Kyriazi was born in Athens, Greece. She received her MFA in painting and ceramics at the Athens School of Fine Arts. On a Fulbright grant, she went to New York in 1993 to continue her research on painting techniques. Immersed in the artistic environment of the city, she engaged in painting, drawing, digital art, and experimental printmaking. Her experimental works, twice selected in competitions by the New York-based International Print Center, utilized the industrial material of sandpaper. She also studied digital photography with Peter Campus at NYU.
Her active interest in digital means soon led to a series of works inspired by stories from her origin, combining digital photography with animation video, music, and poetry: Dormant (1997), Final Domicile (1999), and Tyranny of Light (2002), the latter featuring a poem by Cavafy, which she presented in solo exhibitions in Athens and New York.
